Liturgical Roles

Who We Are:

Members of the parish who participate in the weekend liturgies by serving in one of the liturgical roles designated for laypeople-Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, lectors, altar servers, ministers of hospitality (ushers)

What We Do:


  • Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion set up the Communion supplies before Mass, distribute the hosts and Precious Blood during Mass, and wash the Communion vessels after Mass. Some also take Communion to the homebound.
  • Lectors read the First and Second readings and the General Intercessions at Mass.
  • Altar servers assist the priest during the liturgy.
  • Ministers of hospitality greet the parishioners. as they arrive for Mass, assist with seating, arrange for someone to bring up the gifts at the Offertory, take the collection, direct the Communion procession, distribute bulletins, and secure the monies collected after Mass.


Requirements for Service:


  • All liturgical ministers must participate in one or more training sessions for their ministry.
  • Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion and lectors must be in "good standing" with the Church, have been Confirmed, and be at least 15 years old. Altar servers must have received 1st Communion.
